RAPID ACTION FORCE

A major stampede was averted with the collective effort by the Rapid Action Force, National Disaster Response Force, and the Kerala Police when the police barricade was broken in the rush of pilgrims entering the Lower Tirumuttom from the Valiya Nadappanthal around 9.40 pm on Monday.

Few pilgrims were injured in the rush; however a major stampede tragedy was averted with the effective intervention of the well-trained crowd management forces attached to the Central Reserve Police Force.

The rush of pilgrims who reached the Sannidhanam from the northern side of the Lower Tirumuttom crossing the Bailey Bridge had turned the situation out of gear.

With hardly 36 hours left for the Mandalapuja, the sacred grove of Sabarimala has been witnessing an unprecedented rush, forcing the police to block the flow of pilgrims periodically to the holy hillock from Pampa periodically from Sunday night.

The throng of pilgrims turned so heavy that the space between the U-Turn on the Saramkuthi path and the Valiyanadappanthal has been witnessing a near-stampede from Monday afternoon.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been controlling the crowd along this highly risky and difficult stretch to avert any untoward situation.

The vehicular traffic on the main trunk road leading to Pampa too has gone up and the police had to block the Pampa-bound vehicles at definite intervals at Plappally and Nilackal. The parking lots at the main base camp at Nilackal have turned full.

HEAVY RUSH IN SABARIMALA 10/11.12.12

A near-stampede situation has been prevailing in the Sabarimala Sannidhanam since the early hours of Tuesday, as the crowd turned uncontrollable.

Many pilgrims, especially women and children, fainted. Personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been managing the crowd since Monday night, as the police were overwhelmed.

It took 14-16 hours for the pilgrims to reach the Sannidhanam from Pampa. A group of pilgrims from Kannur told The Hindu that they started climbing Neelimala from Pampa 15 minutes past midnight and reached the Valiyanadappanthal only around 4 p.m.

Overcrowding outside the barricade at the entrance of the Valiyanadappanthal created chaos half-an-hour past midnight. A major stampede was averted, thanks to the intervention of the RAF and NDRF personnel, a volunteer of Ayyappa Seva Sanghom said.

The police’s failure to divert the pilgrims returning from Sabarimala through a Bailey Bridge also contributed to the overcrowding along the Forest Office-Valiyanadappanthal stretch. The virtual queue system went haywire.

The drinking water supply to pilgrims waiting for long in the iron barricades was affected because of poor arrangements. Many pilgrims were found gasping for breath in the congestion caused by the bottleneck at the entry point of the queue leading to the Holy-18 steps before the giant peepal tree at the Lower Tirumuttom.

Pilgrims who climb the broad steps leading to the Lower Tirumuttom from the Valiyanadapanthal have to enter the narrow barricade sandwiched between the peepal tree and the fire place (Aazhi) after much push and pull.

In the previous years, during the rush days of the pilgrim season, the Travancore Devaswom Board used to extend the darshan time by two hours, opening the temple earlier, at 3 a.m., and closing it 30 minutes late (11.30 p.m.). However, the temple administration is yet to extend the darshan time this year.

The police have been blocking pilgrims at Pampa, Sabaripeedhom and Marakkoottom at regular intervals since Monday evening to regulate the flow to the Sannidhanam.

Sabarimala Darshan Queue Booking FAQs

How it works

Upon booking the tickets, you may reach Pampa on the selected time and enter into the direct Queue without waiting much. This will help the devotees to plan their pilgrim time on an advanced basis as per the available slots. Devotees with queue coupon tickets will get entry without being in queue till ‘Nadapanthal’ and hence its assured that no waiting period is required for darshan. At Pampa, Kerala Police will verify the Coupon and Photo ID card to ensure that only pre-registered pilgrims are allowed through this Queue.

Should I need to Register in the site to get the Coupon?

Without registering you can search for the availability. To book a slot, you must register on the portal first. Ther best option is to create your profile by registering on the site, it will help to book the slots anytime you may wish to.

How to make a Group Booking?

A Registered user can do the ‘Group Booking’ from his profile. To do group booking, select the ‘Group Booking‘ button from the ‘My Groups‘ menu and proceed with booking.

Do I have to pay for the Coupon?

Absolutely No! Kerala Police is providing this services free of cost to devotees, though it need investment for developing and maintaining this facility.

How to know if there are slots available for a particular day?

Availability of the slots are based on the number of devotees. Provide the number of devotees and month you like to visit. Then you can view the current availability. If the blocks are shown in red, it means the the Slots for that duration is completely booked. System will also have allocations on an Advance basis and Tatkal basis. Tatkal based availability of a particular date will be released before 7 days only.

Is this slot booking facility open only for Manadalakalam only or throughout the year?

This facility will be available only for the main Pilgrim period (Mandalapooja – approximately from November 15 to December 26) and Makaravilakku – approximately from December 30 to January 14).

Who can book a slot?

The booking of the advance queue is opened to all other than ladies female devotees of age between 10 and 50. Due to the rituals, ladies within this age are not allowed to visit the temple and hence coupons are not issued to this particular age group.

What documents should I need to book a slot?

You should have your recent photograph with a maximum file size of 30 KB. All devotees above 18 years of age must have a photo identity card issued by Government or allied institutions. Accepted ID cards includes PAN Card, Electoral ID Card, Passport, Driving License and Aadhar Card. School/College ID card also are accepted.

What documents should I carry when going for Darshan?

You must carry the coupon and the originl of the ID card given at the time of creating the coupon.

What is the maximum time limit upto which the slots can be booked?

The limit of the reserve time will vary based on the real time submission time and other settings.

How early does the booking for a slot start?

Booking slots will be open one month before for a week. Example: Slots of November 20-27 will be open October 20th.

How to take the print outs of Virtual Queue Coupon?

When you submit all the details, system will prepare the coupon and a button for printing the coupon. You can also download the coupon to print it in future. If you have logged in while creating the coupon, system will email the coupon in pdf format and you can print the coupon from the group booking page. To view the tickets in pdf, your machine needs a pdf viewer (Adobe reader) . This is available in most of the machines, otherwise it may be downloaded from the Adobe Website. If you are using gmail, the pdf ticket can be viewed through gmail’s inbuilt pdf viewer.

Does slot booking assure Darshan?

The coupon with a valid time for Darshan will help you reach the ‘Nadappanthal’ at Sannidhanam without much hassles of being in log queues. Volunetteers will guide you through a reserved road to reach sannidhanam.

Can I make corrections to a booked slot?

No. Currently the system is not not permitted make any modification or editing to the previously entered data. If entered any thing wrong by mistake, its suggested to cancel the existing one and create a new one.

Can I modify the Token to somebody else’s name?

No. Coupon generated for one person cannot be modified. At Checking point, Devotee will be verified with the photo ID card and Photograph uploaded.

Can I change the time and/or date of a Booked slot?

No. You have to cancel the existing token and book a new one.

Can I cancel a Booked slot/Token?

Yes. You will have the option to cancel the booking . Log on the website to do this. Please cancel the token if you are unable to come. This will help other devotees to utilize the slot. However the same cannot be transferred to other persons name.

What if I forget my Password?

If you have forgotten or lost your password, you can request for a new password by clicking the ‘Lost your Password?‘ link in the Login form. An email will be sent to you with a link to reset the password.

What is the maximum number of persons allowed for a Group Booking?

Group booking size may vary from time to time based on the managerial decisions. But the allowed count may not exceed more than 60 at any point of time

What if I lost my Coupon?

The coupon is must and without producing the coupon and the ID card submitted at the time of booking, you will not be allowed to enter the VirtualQ. If you have already generated a coupon, you can print copies from the email, or by entering the number of coupon and date, you can retrieve the coupon booked.

1. How to get a Sabarimala Queue Coupon?

   Devotees has to first search for availability at Kerala police portal sabarimalaq.com, by providing the number of devotees and month like to visit. There is an option to choose a specific time of visit (Morning / Day / Evening / Night) also. On submission, site will show the available days of month in ‘Green’ colour. If the Devotees can choose their desired date of visit by click on the calender date. This will show the time slots available.
   To register the slot, you have to create your profile first. Sign up and complete the user profile creation, then select a booking slot and confirm booking. 
   You can directly print the coupons generated, also the coupon will be sent to the email ID.
   Devotees need to provide the mandatory details like Name, Address with PIN, Gender, Age, Photo ID and ID Number. It is desirable if they can provide the Contact (Telephone or Mobile) numbers and email though its not mandatory.
   A recent photograph (permitted size not more than 30kB) should be uploaded to complete the registration for issuance of Coupon.

Fungus-affected appams destroyed in Sabarimala

As many as 7 lakh appams (sweetmeats) were burnt down and was destroyed in Sabarimala as some devotees received fungus affected appam the other day. The appams were burnt down in the incinerator as per the decision taken by the devaswom board.

 There will be 7 appams in one packet and one lakh such packets were destroyed. The DB has incurred a loss of Rs 25 lakh due to this. A devotee from Thiruvananthapuram said 30 of the 50 packets of appam he bought were found spoiled. Several other pilgrims had similar complaints. 

It is said that high moister content in the appam and poor quality of ingredients used have triggered the growth of fungus. Authorities concerned started preparing appam and aravana two weeks ago, to meet the high demand. Sources said around one lakh packets of appam, each containing three pieces, are sold daily. Mini-Pampa to be official Sabarimala transit point

The bathing ghat at Kuttippuram, popularly called Mini-Pampa, will soon be declared an official transit point of Sabarimala. The government is all set to endow the bathing ghat near the Kuttippuram bridge with the official status of Sabarimala transit point.

 Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar said here on Friday that the official declaration would take place next week. He said Mini-Pampa was being developed spending Rs.10 lakh, considering the halt there of Sabarimala pilgrims from northern Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

 He said the vulnerability of the bathing ghat for accidents too was a reason for revamping it. Several people, including pilgrims and tourists, had drowned at the bathing ghat. Mr. Anil Kumar said better facilities would be installed at Mini-Pampa. Although the work would begin soon, the Minister said that the renovation would be completed only by the next Sabarimala season. 

The Minister asked District Collector M.C. Mohandas to submit a draft plan within a week for renovating Mini-Pampa. Mr. Anil Kumar said all protective measures would be taken to minimise accidents at the bathing ghat. High-mast lamps would soon be erected, he said. 

 The District Tourism Promotion Council has appointed six life guards at the site. Eleven more people will be appointed there in view of the influx of pilgrims during the Sabarimala season. The Minister said one more boat would be launched at Mini-Pampa with the help of the district panchayat. Ten police personnel would be put on duty at the site. 

The help of the Health Department would be ensured to provide medical aid for the pilgrims, he said. Iron barricades would be erected at the bathing ghat, he said. Flags and danger warnings would be erected at places with potential danger. Toilets would be set up at Mini-Pampa for tourists, he said. 

 The Minister said a Sabarimala transit point outside the purview of the Travancore Devaswom was being made considering the number of pilgrims visiting Mini-Pampa and the dangers lurking there.

More than 35000 bags of garbage collected this season

This year, 35,000 big bags of garbage were taken out from the shrine complex and the foothills in a massive clean-up operation initiated by more than 5000 volunteers from Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram. 

 Volunteers included ashram residents, students from various campuses at Amritapuri, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Kochi and Mysore, besides devotees from across Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

 The clean-up operation was held Nov 3-4 and shrine authorities the complex is now spruced up and ready to receive the new batch of pilgrims. “Our volunteers sorted out items that could be burned and used the incinerator at the hilltop.

 The things that could not be burned will be given to the district authorities, who have promised help with garbage disposal. Among the volunteers were foreigners too (who are devotees of Amma),” Sudeep, director of the Amritapuri Brahmachari, who led the clean-up work, told IANS. Sudheep said volunteers collected more than 35,000 big bags of waste material, including clothes and plastic, from the hill shrine, from the foothills of the temple and the pampa river left behind by the pilgrims

 The state government and its departments like the police force have taken up another operation, Punyam Poonkavanam (sacred forest grove), aimed at making the Sabarimala hill shrine garbage-free. The forest department, with help from volunteers of the Akhila Bharatha Ayyapa Seva Sanghom, cleaned up the temple town and the approach roads that pilgrims use. 

 It has also put up boards to urge conservation of the forest and cleanliness along the route of the pilgrimage. The paths to the temple are cleaned every alternate day.

 The river Pamba, which flows near the foothills of the shrine, and in which devotees take a customary bath before climbing uphill to the temple, is also under the care of the Kerala State Biodiversity Board. 

 KP Laladhas, member-secretary of the Board, said a meeting had been held to initiate steps for the conservation of the river. “Pilgrims have taken to leaving behind their clothes once they finish the pilgrimage. We are taking steps to create awareness of this problem,” Laladhas said.

Virtual Queue booking and ID Cards

                           ID CARDS – A MUST 

 Those who are doing virtual queue booking should carry the original ID cards used for the booking , during the journey. Those below 15 years had been exempted from producing ID cards if they were accompanied by their parents. 

 Steps had been taken to check impersonation by making identity cards mandatory, introducing bar codes on online receipts and restricting group bookings to 60. The pilgrims who had registered their names should reach Pampa only at the time given in the online receipt and report to any of the 10 counters working round the clock for verification. 

 Two counters had been set up for those coming via Pulmedu. After the verification, the pilgrims would have to reach the Valiya Nadappanthal at the time allotted to them. They will be allowed to enter the general queue through the two barricades for holy darshan at the Lower Tirumuttom, bypassing the queue along the trekking path-Valiya Nadappanthal stretch.

The Karnataka Government had made arrangements for medical and other assistance for pilgrims from their State heading for Sabarimala. They will also set up a call centre for the Sabarimala Pilgrims to meet exigencies. This assurance was given by minister for muzrai and ports Kota Srinivas Poojari on Thursday. 

 According to him, people from Karnataka comprise 30 per cent of the pilgrims heading for Sabarimala. About 18 lakh to 20 lakh pilgrims visit the Sabarimala hill temple from different parts of the state. This year, 30 policemen who can speak English, have already been stationed at Sabarimala. Ninety more will join soon to help pilgrims from Karnataka. As for medical assistance, Laskhmi Hospital located near Sabarimala is offering free treatment to pilgrims from Karnataka. 

The government is tying up with two government hospitals to cater to the needs of pilgrims from Karnataka, he said. The Kerala government has come forward to provide six acres of land to the state government near Sabarimala at Nilakkal. “We will take up construction to provide facilities to pilgrims from our state,” he said.

Snake-catchers busy rescuing devotees on Sabarimala pilgrimage

Snake catchers are having a packed schedule during the pilgrimage season at hill-shrine Sabarimala as they are busy rescuing devotees from any reptile-attack. The annual pilgrimage to Sabarimala temple, which began on November 16 this year, attracts over three million pilgrims, including foreigners, every year during the ‘mandala’ (pilgrim) season. 

 Located on the slopes of Western Ghats, the shrine which is perched amidst lush forest cover is home to many wild animals, especially poisonous snakes, tuskers and leopards. Since snakes crawling onto forest roads pose a threat to devotees trekking to the temple, the Travancore Devaswom Board, which manages the shrine, has roped in a group of snake-catchers to deal with the deadly reptiles.

 They are deployed at Sannidhanam and Pampa for the convenience of the devotees, TDB sources said. Their mobile phone numbers are given to all police personnel on duty at the temple premises.

Work on Andhra Bhavan at Sabarimala to begin soon

Sabarimala: 

The work on the Andhra Bhavan at Nilakkal camp near Sabarimala would begin without delay, N Vidyasagar, Deputy Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council said here on Monday. The Trvancore Devaswom Board (TDB) had already provided five acres of land for building the Andhra Bhavan, for the stay of pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh, who constitute a major chunk of devotees visiting the hillshrine of Lord Ayyappa during the 'mandala' and 'makaravilakku' seasons. Vidyasagar, who offered worship at the shrine, said he would take up the matter with the Andhra Pradesh Government on his return to Hyderabad. He also participated in the "punyam poongavanam" scheme launched at the Sannidhanam to keep the surroundings of the temple clean and hygienic. Lauding the programme, Vidyasagar said he would suggest the Andhra Pradesh Government to give publicity to the scheme.

The Southern Railway will run special trains to clear the extra rush during the Sabarimala season. Train number 06001 Chennai Central – Kollam Superfast Weekly Special will leave Chennai Central at 3.15 pm on Mondays from November 19 to January 21, 2013 and arrive Kollam at 5.30 am on Tuesdays. 

 Train 06002 Kollam – Chennai Central Weekly Special will leave Kollam at 11.15 am on Tuesdays from November 20 to January 22, 2013 and arrive at Chennai Central at 3.30 am on Wednesdays.

 It is important that after successful booking, the  pilgrims have to download and print their coupons.   The Virtual-Q Coupon contains the date & time of  darshan, name and photograph of the pilgrim, barcode, etc.  During the pilgrimage the  pilgrims are required to carry these coupons and the photo identity card used for registration.

Pilgrims who carry ‘Verified” coupons are only entitled to avail the facilities of Sabarimala Virtual-Q System from Pampa to Sannidhanam. Please note that pilgrims have to produce the Coupon and Photo Identity Card at the Queue Coupon Verification Counters facilitated exclusively for this purpose at Pampa.   Pilgrims coming through the Virtual-Queue System are allowed to join the queue at Sannidhanam Nadapanthal.

Kalabhabhisekham And Laksharchana Conducted At Sabarimala

Kalabhabhishekam was conducted at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple on the second day of the Malayalam month of Mithunam on Saturday.

Thantri Kandararu Maheswararu performed the Kalabhakalasa pooja at the nalambalam at 11.30 a.m. as part of the ritual.
Kalabhabhishekam on the idol of Lord Ayyappa was conducted by thantri Maheswararu during uchcha pooja after the procession carrying the kalabhakalasam circumambulating the sreekovil.

Sahasrakalasam was the other special ritual conducted. Udayasthamana pooja, pushpabhishekam and padi pooja were the rituals held.

Also the Laksharchana was conducted on Sunday, June 17th. The thantri performed pooja on the brahmakalsam at sopanam at 6 a.m.,

The temple would be closed on June 19 evening, marking the conclusion of the five-day monthly pooja for the
Malayalam month of Mithunam.

Astrological Examination

Kerala Temple Affairs Minister V S Sivakumar today sought a report from Travancore Devaswom Board on the controversy over the conduct of a "devaprasnam" (astrological examination) at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple without prior consent of competent authorities. Accordingto reports, a "devaprasnam" was conducted at the temple premises to ascertain if the plot identified for building a free meal(annadanam) complex was ideal or not. The issue became controversial as the ritual was conducted by the temple officials without the prior approval of the TDB, administering the shrine, and the 'thanthri' (high priest), asmandated by the temple board manual. When the matter was brought to his notice, the Minister said a report had been sought on the issue from TDB president M Rajagopalan Nair.

The Astrological Consultation

The astrological consultation (known as ‘raasi-vaickal') was reportedly organised by Devaswom administrative officer K.Rajan and a Kochi-based private construction company that has been tasked to prepare the design and project report of the proposed four-storey Annadana Mandapam.

Renowned astrologer Padmanabha Sarma conducted the astrological consultation in the presence of astrologer Kanippayur Krishnan Namboodiripad and the administrative officer, at the Namaskara Mandapam of the Ayyappa Temple on Wednesday morning.

The 10-Day Annual Festival At Sabarimala

The 10-day annual festival at the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala began with the ceremonial ‘kodiyettu’ (flag hoisting) on Tuesday.
The temple chief priest (Tantri), Kandararu Maheswararu, assisted by the head priest (Melsanthi), N. Balamurali, performed the rituals preparatory to the kodiyettu ceremony in the morning.
The ceremonial flag was taken out in a customary procession around the sanctum sanctorum, with the accompaniments of a caparisoned elephant, the sacred ‘marappani’ and other traditional temple percussion, prior to the ‘kodiyettu’.
The tantri hoisted the ceremonialflag, after performing the ‘kodimara-puja’ amidst loud chants of ‘Ayyappa Saranam’ mantra.
S. Jagadeesh, Special Commissioner appointed by Kerala High Court; N. Vasu, Devaswom Commissioner, and M. Sathishkumar, Sabarimala Executive Officer, were among those who have attended the kodiyettu ceremony.
Utsavabali darshan
According to Mr Sathishkumar, the auspicious ‘utsavabali’ darshan as part of the annual festival will be held between 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm on all days from March 28 to April 4. Sreebhoothabali is another important ritual held in connection with the annual festival on all these days.
The ritualistic ‘pallivetta’ will be held at Saramkuthi on the traditional trekking path on April 4 evening.
Aratt ceremony
The ceremonial ‘Aratt’ marking the grand finale of the annual temple festival will be held at the specially prepared ‘Aratt kadavu’ in river Pampa on the foothills of Pampa on April 5 forenoon.
The Tantri will perform the ‘Aratt puja’ and ‘Utcha puja’ at the Arattkadavu and the ‘Aratt’ processionwill return to the Sannidhanam, later around 10 pm. The annual festival will come to a close with the Tantri bringing down the ceremonial flag on the temple mast.
The Ayyappa shrine will be closedafter the ‘Athazhapuja’, later.
